PHOTOS: Students sport a familiar hat in the name of reading

Red and white hats filled Theatre Cedar Rapids Wednesday as students from Cleveland, Harrison, Taylor and Wilson elementary schools gathered to celebrate reading.
The students received the stovepipe hats as they entered the theater — gifts from the National Education Association in honor of the 13th annual Read Across America event.
“You guys look good in red and white,” Greg Johnson, an executive committee member of the NEA, told the audience of about 500 students and school staff.
Johnson and Paula Monroe, also an executive committee member of the NEA, traveled to Cedar Rapids with one vital message: read, read, read. Special guests, including the Cat in the Hat, helped emphasize literacy’s importance in an entertaining fashion.
Studies show that students who read — and are read to — achieve better grades in school. Strong reading skills are also linked to lifelong success.
“Reading is good for you,” said Jayden Shuman, 9, a third grader at Wilson.
“It’s real fun and educational,” said James Hutchins, 8, a second grader at Taylor.
“It helps you learn words,” said Desiree Williams, 9, a third grader at Harrison.
Cedar Rapids was one of three stops NEA made during its Read Across America Midwest Tour. Monroe said the organization chose Cedar Rapids because of the 2008 flood.
“It seemed like this was the right thing to do,” she said.
Each student who attended Wednesday’s event left with a new book — Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat” — and a bag of reading goodies. Each school library received a $1,000 check for book purchases. The Teacher Store received a check for $2,500.
NEA’s Read Across America is a year-round literacy effort. Each year, schools and communities hold special celebrations on or around March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
“It’s wonderful to have this kind of support for reading,” said Kathy Conley, Wilson’s principal.
Wilson launched its own reading initiative this week with “One School, One Book.”
All of the school’s elementary students — grades second through fifth — received a copy of Sara Pennypacker’s “The Talented Clementine” during parent-teacher conferences. Students and their families are asked to read one chapter each night throughout the month. The school reinforces the assignment with daily trivia about the reading.
“We want to create a buzz about reading,” said Jenny Kramer, a second grade teacher at Wilson. “Hopefully it will be an annual event.”
This is so awesome, anything to get kids motivated to read more and to get parents involved in their kids’ education! GO TEACHERS!!

When my twins were born 16 months ago, I wanted to have a new cam corder to capture every one of the beautiful moments with them. I don’t know if there were FLIP available on the market at the time, but no one had informed me regarding it. So i got another camcorder but I had a difficult time to convert the videos on my PC in order to see them and I couldn’t share any videos with my family and friends. And I thought it was small! Now I’ve the FLIP and this is the best! I really like my FLIP! It’s user friendly and we were surprised about the quality of the videos! I just wish I had had it before!
